Crabs are fun to catch, great to eat and one of the best reasons to head over to Winchester Bay. Crabbing is open year-round to license holders with a crab ring, pot or baited line. Just head down to the crab dock and catch what you can, including Dungeness and red rock crabs.
While female Dungeness must be thrown back, larger males are bountiful most of the time. The best times to catch the larger ones is late summer and early fall. That’s when most of the smaller crabs will have grown into their larger shells.
Get to know your crabs. Visit the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife shellfish resource page. There you can find resources on where to crab, what to look for, and how to catch the big ones.
